The end of innocence

St. Agatha 8th Grade Graduation 1971.

It seems like this is the time when for me the brotherhood just had a hint of starting to jell. It was cool, we were heading to High School..

Remember Wally Pivetta? He was from my neighborhood on Fenton. Him and I got busted drinking Stroh's fire brewed ale at Taft junior high school field one afternoon and I think it was celebrating 8th grade graduation! Detroit cops on scooters chased us down in the field and then proceeded to Fenton Ave to tell our parents.

Taft JH was a favorite hangout of ours since it was just a few doors down from my house. I can remember playing football one afternoon and Randy Parzych riding a mini-bike back and forth through our field. In a moment of frustration, I threw the football at him as he sped by and it knocked him off the bike. An older fellow who was his neighbor walked right up to me and, without a word, coldcocked me. I went down hard and was pretty sure I didn't ever want to be punched again.
...and I haven't.

"Innocence" is about the only word that can describe that photo. Heck, I probably didn't even have pubic hair at this time. Does anyone have any photos of us serving as Alter Boys? Remember how "cool" it was coming back to class, a little late, because you served the early mass? And, the milk that came outside the class door? Your family had to have money if you were on the milk list...

I think that's the chunk blower Lorraine Smith walking right next to me in the girl row!!! Was it seventh or eighth grade when Mark Cordero got in a fight with the teacher, Mr Smith?
